Vernal pools are contained basin depressions which contain water seasonally, anywhere from 2 months out of the year all but the driest part of the year. A vernal pool can be as small as a puddle and larger than a baseball field. A vernal pool has no permanent source of water flowing in and out of it. It usually fills with winter snow melt and spring rains, although it can fill in early autumn.
