School
Year: 2010-2011
Part I: Proposal
Directions:
All juniors will need to submit a one page proposal in which they outline their proposed community service project. This proposal must include the following information:
v What the student plans to do and why they want to do this specific activity for the project.
v What their specific goals are for doing this particular project.
v The signature of the advisor who is supervising your community service and a parent signature.
Proposals are due on the following dates: On or before Friday, January 7, 2011 for juniors taking social studies during the first semester, and on or before February 4, 2011 for second semester students. NOTE: Failure to turn in the proposal by the due date will result in a failing grade for the entire project.
Proposals must be word processed in Times-New Roman 12 point font and be double spaced. Your Modern World History teacher MUST review your proposed project and approve your choice – BEFORE you begin the service. Community Service projects are VOLUNTEER opportunities for an organization and must benefit the community at large. Paid services do NOT count as Community Service projects. As juniors, you are required to complete twenty-five (25) hours of an approved community service project on or before May 6, 2011.
SUMMER INSTRUCTIONS: If you wish to complete your community hours over the summer of 2010, your service MUST be approved in ADVANCE by Mr. Ames. If you choose this option, you must obtain your signatures before the end of the school year, and submit your proposal to him and receive approval before the end of the school day on June 18. You may be able to meet with Mr. Ames at another time, but you will need to set this appointment up in advance.
You may split your community service hours by completing them at more than one place. If you choose to do this, you must note this in your proposal. If you need to switch your service to a new location, you may do this, but you must submit a new proposal to your supervising teacher for approval.
If you want to achieve the most success with this assignment, you need to choose a project that interests you. There are many different ways to fulfill this requirement, so DO NOT choose something that will serve merely to occupy you for twenty-five hours. Not only will you suffer, but your report will probably not be something that you want to put the time into to complete correctly.
Try to think of this not as a school assignment but rather
as a chance to broaden your horizons and help others at the same time. Your project need not be limited to
Acceptable choices include, but are NOT limited to the following: specific projects around the school (supervised by a teacher, administrator, or educational support person), supervising/chaperoning events at a church or civic organization that you do NOT regularly supervise/chaperone/attend, volunteering for a political campaign, assisting the Trustees in a volunteer capacity at Crane Castle or other property. Further suggestions of non-commercial organizations that have programs that MAY meet the requirements:
Unacceptable choices include, but are not limited to the following: cleaning your room/yard/house, homework, free babysitting for your family and/or friends, work/service that you do as a regular part of your church experience, i.e. acolyting that you do already or being a member of your youth group, any activities that you do for any community service that you are completing for another party (i.e. guidance, the court, etc.), working with pre-schoolers in a the Child Development class at the high-school (if you are receiving course credit already), an independent project that is not formally supervised (like going to the beach and picking up trash on your own, as opposed to the formal beach clean-up process), etc. If you have any questions, please check in with the appropriate teacher.
Part 2: Time Sheet
1. Maintain a log/time sheet indicating the hours and dates of participation along with appropriate signatures and a minimum one-sentence description of the service activities performed. Your project will not be accepted unless the hours equal the required twenty-five and each session is signed by your advisor.
Part 3: The Write-Up
1. When you have completed your required number of hours, you must write a report on your experience. This three to five page report must include the following: a summary of your experience backed up by specific stories about activities, incidents, people that you encountered during your community service experience; how well you related to them and others around you (kids, co-workers, the people that were helping you, etc.), how well (or not) your goals were met during the experience; whether or not you found any meaning in this experience and whether or not you had any fun.
2. You must include at least FIVE pictures of you at your community service location that show you engaged in your community service activity. Each of these pictures should you working during different “shifts” at your work site. Your project will not be accepted without the required number of photographs. If necessary, you may need to buy a disposable camera at minimal expense and develop the film to satisfy this requirement.
Part 4: Parental Signature - Comments
Your final write-up must also include a parent, guardian, or advisor signature, along with at least a one paragraph reflection on your community service project.
Project Grading:
This project will show as an independent grade on your report card. The available grades are either an “A, a “P” for passing or an “F” for failing.
Ø In order to receive an “A” on this assignment, all of the components MUST be completed by the due dates, be neat, contain ALL of the appropriate information, and be well written.
Ø A “P” for passing grade will be granted if any of the components are incomplete, or if the project is received after the due dates.
Ø Failure to include a component part, turn in the assignment, or submit the appropriate approvals (initial proposal, time sheet) will result in a grade of “F” on your report card. Again, each of the elements listed above must be handed in to receive a passing grade.
Due Dates:
Proposal Due Date: January 7, 2011 or February 4, 2011
Final Community Service Due Date: May 6, 2011
