Cafeteria

IPSWICH PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Office of Finance & Operations

To:                   All Staff, Students and Parents

Regarding:        Increase in Cafeteria Prices beginning SY 2005-2006

Date:                July, 2005

A group of concerned School Committee members, cafeteria managers, administrators, parents, students and citizens met last year as a Nutrition Advisory Sub-committee to evaluate all elements of the Ipswich food service program.  Among their recommendations to the School Committee was one to increase the price of all lunches by 50 cents, in order to purchase higher quality ingredients and maintain operating balances in the revolving accounts as prices of food, supplies and labor increase.  This account will continue to cover the department’s share of building operating costs (heat, electricity, water/sewer), as well.  The prices of 8 oz. milk, breakfast and reduced price meals will not change. This recommendation was unanimously voted at the School Committee meeting of May 19, 2005.

The prices as of September 1, 2005 are as follows:

                                                                        Lunch               Breakfast          8 oz Milk

            Doyon & Winthrop Elementary            $2.00                  $1.00               $ .35

            Middle & High Schools                        $2.25                 $1.25               $ .35

            Adult Lunch (all schools)                       $2.75

            Reduced Price meals, all schools           $  .40                 $  .30

              (for qualifying students)

The Nutrition Advisory Sub-committee also recommended, and the School Committee voted to:

  • Eliminate soft drink sales from vending machines in schools
  • Work to continually improve the nutritional quality of all food service offerings, within the bounds of student acceptance and available funds
  • Offer 10 oz. milk as an a la carte alternative, but retain the traditional 8 oz. milk as part of the regular meal price.

There will be other adjustments to a la carte prices, especially at the High-Middle School cafeteria, commensurate with cost increases.
